Mountain formation by repeated, inhomogeneous crustal failure in a neutron star

چکیده

ABSTRACT The elastic crust of a neutron star fractures repeatedly as it spins down electromagnetically. An idealized, macroscopic model inhomogeneous crustal failure is presented based on cellular automaton with nearest-neighbour tectonic interactions involving strain redistribution and thermal dissipation. Predictions are made the size waiting-time distributions events, well rate down. last event typically occurs when to $\approx 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ its birth frequency implications for rotational glitch activity. Neutron stars commonly suggested sources continuous gravitational waves. output converted into predictions star’s mass ellipticity wave functions age, future observations instruments such Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).

Neutron Star Crustal Interface Waves

The eigenfrequencies of nonradial oscillations are a powerful probe of a star’s interior structure. This is especially true when there exist discontinuities such as at the neutron star (NS) ocean/crust boundary, as first noted by McDermott, Van Horn & Hansen. The interface mode associated with this boundary has subsequently been neglected in studies of stellar nonradial oscillations. We revisit...

Double Neutron Star Formation

We present results of a population synthesis study aimed at examining the role of spin-kick alignment in producing a correlation between the spin period of the first-born neutron star and the orbital eccentricity of observed double neutron star binaries in the Galactic disk. We find spin-kick alignment to be compatible with the observed correlation, but not to alleviate the requirements for low...

Supernova Explosions and Neutron Star Formation

The current picture of the collapse and explosion of massive stars and the formation of neutron stars is reviewed. According to the favored scenario, however by no means proven and undisputed, neutrinos deposit the energy of the explosion in the stellar medium which surrounds the nascent neutron star. Observations, in particular of Supernova 1987A, suggest that mixing processes play an importan...

Neutron Star Formation and Birth Properties

Our current knowledge of neutron star formation, progenitors, and natal masses, spins, magnetic fields, and space velocities is briefly reviewed from a theorist’s perspective. More observational information is badly needed to constrain theoretical possibilities.
