ABSTRACT The elastic crust of a neutron star fractures repeatedly as it spins down electromagnetically. An idealized, macroscopic model inhomogeneous crustal failure is presented based on cellular automaton with nearest-neighbour tectonic interactions involving strain redistribution and thermal dissipation.
